“Road safety can never be emphasized enough when lives are at stake,” notes the Manila Standard Today.
According to a survey carried out by the World Health Organization, the paper records, “road crashes kill nearly 1.3 million people and injure between 20 and 50 million each year worldwide.” RTAs are “the leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 29” as well as being “the second cause of death among those aged five to 14 worldwide.”
But happily the Manila Standard Today has an easy-to-follow check list for its readers that can help them “avoid becoming among the statistics by simply following road rules, driving carefully, and even having your car insured:
1. Make sure your car is in tip-top shape. No matter how busy you are, always make sure you pay your mechanic a visit before a trip.
2. Familiarize yourself with the route by studying roadmaps. This can help you look for exits, shortcuts and see what the terrain is like.
3. Know your stops. Kids might want to have frequent trips to the toilet and, in case you and your family or friends get hungry, you’ll know where to load up on food.
4. Always make room for delays. Meaning, if you need to reach a destination at a certain time, add extra minutes or an hour to your arrival time.
5. Make sure everyone is wearing a seatbelt. That includes your pets.
6. Luggage should always be kept in one area where they will not keep everyone from having a comfortable and safe ride inside the car.
7. Wear your most comfortable traveling clothes – what you put on your back should not restrict you from controlling your car or getting through traffic.
8. Have necessary items like money and sunglasses, within easy reach. Mobile phones are a big No-No. Beware of distractions.
9. Always follow road rules, especially speed limit signs.
10. Despite your best plans, there will always be unavoidable circumstances like cars breaking down in the middle of the road. Bring a few basic supplies for the car like washer fluid, coolant, and oil.
